WOULD ESTABLISH 18 AS THE MINIMUM AGE FOR MEP?

Why different ages?

Following the Green Paper on equality and non-discrimination in an enlarged European Union (EU), the Commission set out a strategy for the positive and active promotion of non-discrimination and equal opportunities for all.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, and although the minimum voting age is 18, except Austria that after the legal reform  July 1, 2007, is 16 years old. However, the minimum age to run for MEP,  depends on each country, ranging the ages from 18  in Spain -and other 13 countries- and  25  in Cyprus, Italy and Greece. You can see it very clearly in the following chart:

We think this doesn´t favor the equal opportunities therefore we propose as initiative, MEPs are elected:

Minimum age to be elected, 18 years old in all European countries.
